Ioanna Christopoulou
About Me

Psychologist • Clinical Psychologist and Gestalt Psychotherapy Trainee

My name is Ioanna Christopoulou, and I am a licensed Psychologist with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of East London. I am currently completing my Master of Science in Applied Clinical Psychology at the University of Lancashire.

My foundation is Gestalt therapy, and I am currently a trainee in a four-year training program at the Gestalt Foundation in Greece. I work with a trauma-informed perspective, offering a warm, respectful, and supportive therapeutic relationship. I believe that therapy is not about quick fixes, but about creating a space where you can feel safe enough to explore yourself honestly and at your own pace.

I am deeply interested in the connection between emotional life, the body, and personal meaning. My intention is to meet each person with curiosity, care, and attunement, and to support you in developing greater self-understanding, selfcompassion, and inner stability as you move through life’s challenges.

How I work

Gestalt at the core, integrative in practice

I take a holistic view, working with the mind, body, and soul as a unified whole. I believe that true healing happens when all parts of you are acknowledged and understood. Sessions are tailored to your pace and goals, with an emphasis on safety, collaboration, and respect for your boundaries.

My work is grounded in Gestalt therapy, and I draw from a range of approaches including CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and trauma-informed practices. I also integrate body-oriented and somatic methods, always adapting my approach to each person’s unique needs.

At this time, I offer therapy exclusively online. I work with people whose time zones are close to Greece (Eastern European Time, EET / UTC+2, and Eastern European Summer Time, EEST / UTC+3). This includes clients based in Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. This allows us to find session times that are realistic, consistent, and supportive of your daily life.

Each person comes to therapy with many different parts, feelings, and inner voices. My work is about creating a safe space where these parts can be welcomed, listened to, and understood with care. When you begin to relate to yourself in this way, therapy can open the door to real, meaningful change and a deeper, more authentic way of living.

From Lived Experience to Practice: The Heart of My Work

Over the years, I have gained experience working in a variety of clinical, community, and organizational settings, which has shaped my understanding of mental health from multiple perspectives. Throughout my professional journey, I have worked with people from a wide range of cultural, religious, and social backgrounds, particularly individuals from European, Arab, Latin American and Asian countries. This has deeply shaped my sensitivity to cultural differences, identity, and the many ways life experiences influence how we see ourselves and relate to others.

I completed my Bachelor’s internship at Emfasis Non-Profit in Athens, Greece, where I supported individuals facing social and emotional difficulties. I have also worked as a psychologist at KDAP Diaplasis AMEA in Ethea, Greece, supporting people with disabilities and mental health challenges. In addition, my experience in Human Resources at Klik Uitzendbureau in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, deepened my understanding of work-related stress, interpersonal dynamics, and professional identity.

Currently, I am completing my clinical psychology internship at the General Hospital of Kalamata in the Psychiatry Department, as well as at the Health Center of Kalamata, where I work with individuals experiencing a range of mental health concerns. Alongside this, I am offering online psychotherapy , working with adults in an integrative, trauma-informed, and Gestalt-oriented way.

In addition to my clinical and professional experience, I have also volunteered in Cairo, Egypt as an English teacher. This experience enriched my understanding of cultural diversity, communication, and the human capacity for connection beyond language and borders, and continues to inform the way I relate to people in my therapeutic work.

Since 2019, I have also been in therapy myself, a process that continues to support my personal and professional growth and helps me show up with authenticity, presence, and self-awareness in my work. I work under ongoing professional supervision, ensuring that I continue to develop my skills and offer thoughtful, ethical, and highquality care to the people I support.

Approach

What is Gestalt Therapy?

Gestalt therapy is a humanistic and experiential form of psychotherapy. It emphasizes awareness of the here and now, integrating thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations into a unified understanding of the self.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, Gestalt uses active methods and practical tools designed to increase awareness, enhance self-regulation, and resolve unfinished patterns that may contribute to psychological distress.

Issues I help with:

  • Anxiety and chronic stress
  • Depression and mood-related difficulties
  • Trauma and its emotional or physical impact
  • Psychosomatic and stress-related physical symptoms
  • Relationship and family conflicts
  • Burnout and work-related stress
  • Career difficulties and existential concerns
  • Low self-esteem and difficulties with self-worth
  • Emotional regulation difficulties and feelings of overwhelm
  • Difficulty setting boundaries and prioritising your own needs
  • Perfectionism and people-pleasing patterns
  • Shame, guilt, and a harsh inner critic
  • Life transitions and identity changes
  • Intimacy, closeness, and relationship to the body
  • Loneliness and difficulties with connection

Psychology & Research

Applied Clinical Psychology & Research

Applied clinical psychology focuses on understanding human emotional and relational difficulties through both scientific research and clinical practice, and using this knowledge to support meaningful change in people’s lives. In therapy, this means combining evidence-based knowledge with a sensitive, person-centred approach that respects each individual’s unique experience.

Alongside my clinical training, I maintain a strong interest in research, particularly in the areas of relationships, gender, trauma, and psychosomatic symptoms. For my Bachelor’s degree, I conducted a qualitative thesis exploring men’s views on gender roles, attitudes, and intimate relationships. This work deepened my understanding of how social roles, identity, and relational patterns shape emotional life and close relationships.

Currently, as part of my Master’s in Applied Clinical Psychology, I am conducting quantitative thesis on gender differences in the perception of infidelity in romantic relationships, and how these experiences are associated with betrayal trauma and psychosomatic symptoms. This research reflects my ongoing interest in how relational wounds, trust, and attachment can affect both emotional and physical wellbeing.

My academic work informs my therapeutic practice, helping me integrate scientific understanding with a trauma-informed, holistic, and compassionate approach to therapy.
